When children enter first grade, they are entering what Dr. Maria Montessori called a new "plane of development". The Montessori elementary environment provides opportunities for children to grow socially and academically. Literature, math, science, culture, history, geography and other subject areas serve to challenge curiosity and result in discoveries about the world at large.
The Elementary age child has learned how to learn. Through their long experience of sustained relationships with other children through multi-age classes, they have insight into the personalities of other children, and into how groups function. The outcomes of the Elementary program are independence in action and thought, a sense of moral and social justice, curiosity and an abiding confidence and love of learning.
The student leaves the Montessori elementary program with the self-concept of a capable learner and contributor, and an optimistic vision of his or her own future.
